Cults
What is a cult ? It is a group which teaches doctrines or beliefs which deviate from those held by the historical, evangelical Christian Church. They major on half-truths, or they distort truth. The little truth which they do use is often mixed with error and therefor dangerous; cults do succeed in deceiving many. This was spoken of by Paul: "For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine... They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths" (2 Timothy 4:3,4). Jesus said "For many shall come in my name saying , I am Christ; and shall deceive many" (Mark 13:6).

There are Number of Features Common to all Cults:

  1. Extra-biblical or special revelation.
    • To the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments they add their own revelations, which take precedence over the Bible. Or. A limited number of Scripture passages are used completely out of context resulting in erroneous interpretations.
    • The Bible is explicit in defending its own integrity: "If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned" (Galatians 1:9) (See Revelation 22:18,19)
  2. Salvation by Works.
    • Any teaching that attempts to lead people into right relationship to God apart from the uniqueness of the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ is in error. This can take the form of a complete rejection of Christ and His work, or a partial rejection that attempts to add to His work. The Gospel is of grace-plus nothing and minus nothing ( See Ephesians 2:8,9).
  3. A denial of or lack of full recognition of Jesus Christ as God's Son.
    • He is totally denied or relegated to a place that is less than He merits. "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ ? He is antichrist that denieth the Father and the Son". (1 John 2:22).
    • "For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ". ( 1 Corinthians 3:11).
    • "Christ is the exact likeness of the unseen God. He existed before God made anything at all, and , in fact, Christ himself is the Creator who made everything in heaven and earth". (Colossians 1:15,16)
    • "He is before all things and in him all things hold together" (Colossians 1:17)
    • "And the Word (Jesus) was made flesh and dwelt among us, ( and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth" (John 1:14).
    • "Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12).
